Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Salem fire officials say an apartment building fire has injured at least five people. Deputy Fire Marshal John Stroebel tells the Statesman Journal that some were being treated for smoke inhalation while others suffered fractures after jumping from the second floor during last night’s fire. The cause is under investigation.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A federal prosecutor has told jurors that two Eastern Oregon cattle ranchers were warned in 1999 about carelessly setting fires to improve grazing conditions. Now Dwight Hammond Jr. and his son Steven Hammond are on trial, charged with conspiracy and setting illegal fires on federal grazing land. The East Oregonian reports that defense lawyers told jurors that lightning caused most of the fires in question.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Economists say the recession is over, but Oregon churches and charities say they don’t see it. Demand for private and public aid is rising, and the money to provide it is down. The Oregonian reports organizations are dipping into reserves, scaling back programs or turning people away. Others report volunteer burnout and donor fatigue.

LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) – When Oregon authorities asked for cross-border help in locating a man who fled on foot after a Rainier police pursuit, Cowlitz County deputies dropped by a home near Longview, Wash. There they found a man, and parked outside was a car that had been stolen during a burglary near where the Oregon chase ended. Later deputies found more than $7,000 worth of property taken in the burglary and other suspected stolen goods. Forty-two-year-old Donald Emery was arrested.
