SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department says a contractor will start work as early as July 30 to remove a dock from Agate beach that was washed all the way from Japan after the tsunami. The 66-foot dock will be dismantled and hauled away from the beach north of Newport. Pieces of the dock will be saved for a local memorial.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Police arrested six people yesterday during a demonstration at the Oregon state Capitol in Salem. Two of the demonstrators climbed flag poles and attached homemade banners protesting plans to increase logging on state land. The others were arrested after chaining themselves together inside the offices of Secretary of State Kate Brown and State Treasurer Ted Wheeler.
NEHALEM, Ore. (AP) – Wildlife officials say they’ve killed the coyote that’s believed to have bitten a 5-year-old girl at Nehalem Bay State Park on the Oregon coast. The girl is undergoing a series of rabies shots. Oregon State University will examine the dead coyote for any evidence of disease. Several other park visitors say they recently encountered an aggressive coyote.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A weekend sweep by federal and local law enforcement agencies in Portland and Vancouver, Wash., has resulted in the arrest of six people accused of promoting prostitution. The FBI says the weekend sweep was part of a national enforcement action. Authorities say they will provide counseling and medical help for three juveniles found during the raids.
