PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – One of two major grassland fires burning in southeastern Oregon has made a significant push to the north, prompting officials to warn more residents of the sparsely populated area they should be ready to leave at a moment’s notice. Fire team spokeswoman Tara Martinak says the fire has burned well over 94 square miles – more than 60,000 acres.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police have identified a man who was killed in the parking lot of a northeast Portland apartment complex. Sgt. Pete Simpson says officers responding to a disturbance outside the Village Garden Apartments found 40-year-old Dion Matthews suffering from stab wounds. Paramedics tried to save Matthews, but he died at the scene early yesterday.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – TriMet says a bus driver who twice refused service to women with crying children has retired rather than be fired. Claudeen Hendren ordered a woman and her four children off her bus in Forest Grove last month after a fare dispute led to tears. The Forest Grove News-Times reports a union official says Hendren was upset and plans to file a labor complaint.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) – The president of Nike Inc. says he has decided to change the name of the Joe Paterno Child Development Center, a child care facility at the company’s headquarters. CEO Mark Parker said yesterday that he was deeply saddened by the news coming of the Louis Freeh investigation on the child sex abuse scandal at Penn State. Freeh says Paterno and other top school officials disregarded the welfare of Jerry Sandusky’s victims as they failed to report abuse allegations.
