PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The AAA auto club reports the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Oregon is $3.54. That’s down 2 cents in a week and 44 cents in a month. Some metro prices from today’s survey: Portland $3.52, Salem $3.50, Eugene-Springfield $3.50 and Medford-Ashland $3.55.
VALE, Ore. (AP) – Fire officials say the Long Draw fire in sparsely populated southeast Oregon reached 80 percent containment yesterday. At more than 937-square miles, the fire is Oregon’s largest wildfire in more than a century. Crews were able to resume fighting the Bonita Complex Fire in Malheur County after a lightning knocked out communications Saturday. The 28-square mile fire was 75 percent contained as of yesterday morning.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The University of Oregon has scheduled a public hearing to discuss a plan to randomly test student-athletes for drug use. The Register-Guard reports that the university hopes to have in place by the upcoming academic year new rules to allow random testing of all athletes. The on-campus public hearing is scheduled for Aug. 23.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The state is pressing contempt-of-court charges against the former lawyers for Gary Haugen, the Oregon death-row inmate who is seeking to reject the governor’s clemency. The Statesman Journal reports that the state is taking the action because the pair appealed a Marion County judge’s decision last year to remove them from the case and because they filed appeals on related matters without permission from the presiding judge. A hearing on the charges is scheduled for July 24.
