PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Forecasters warn that thunderstorms expected to rumble through Oregon this week could spark new wildfires. The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for parts of the state. Firefighters took advantage of lower temperatures and higher humidity over the weekend to contain the 900-square-mile Long Draw fire in southeastern Oregon.
LAKEVIEW, Ore. (AP) – Sheriff’s officers in southern Oregon say a woman whose body was found in a utility trailer on national forest land earlier this month is a homicide victim. Lake County Sheriff Phil McDonald says an autopsy has identified the woman as 47-year-old Valerie Annette Watts of Lakeview. Her daughter reported her missing on June 25. The cause of death hasn’t been released.
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says it will provide $250,000 in grants to Oregon and the four other states that are watching debris from last year’s tsunami in Japan wash up on their shores. Each state will receive up to $50,000. U.S. Sen. Mark Begich of Alaska says the money is “woefully inadequate.”
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – Police say an Oregon man tried to cash a check from another man’s account, only to run into his victim at the bank. Medford police arrested 37-year-old Matthew Frombach on Saturday after the victim’s friend chased him down and tackled him outside the bank. Police say the victim had gone to the bank to discuss forged checks cashed on his account when Frombach showed up and tried to cash another check.
