SALEM, Ore. (AP) – About a quarter of the commercial truck drivers who were checked last week in Oregon had been behind the wheel too long without rest. ODOT put the 256 drivers out of service because of the violations. The Statesman Journal reports drivers were screened along I-5 at Ashland, Woodburn and south of Roseburg.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland has eased restrictions on marijuana use among people seeking organ transplants. The state’s largest organ transplant program had required six months of negative drug tests before a patient could go on the waiting list for a liver transplant. The new policy allows a single positive test for marijuana. The Oregonian reports the new approach also applies to kidney, pancreas and heart transplant programs.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Homicide detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in the parking lot of a topless bar in southeast Portland. Officers responded to reports of the shooting late last night and found the man outside the Mystic Gentlemen’s Club. Witnesses told police the man crashed into several cars and a party bus after he was shot.
NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon State University professor says pelicans are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of murre (MUHR) chicks at a seabird colony near Newport. Professor Rob Suryan says brown pelicans flew into the colony near Yaquina Head Monday night. As the adult murres fled, the chicks fell into the ocean or were eaten by the pelicans. Suryan told KVAL the disruption likely means a near failure of this year’s hatch.
