BEND, Ore. (AP) – A police dog that was laid off from the Polk County sheriff’s office due to budget cuts has found a new job with the Bend Police Department. Ranger is a 2-year-old bloodhound. NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – One of two dogs thought lost in the wreck of a fishing boat on the central Oregon coast has been found alive. Two men and their dogs were aboard the 48-foot vessel when it crashed into the north jetty at Newport Sunday night. Both men survived with minor injuries but they thought the two dogs drowned. One didn’t, but yesterday another fisherman found a 6-month-old pit bull on the jetty and took him to the animal shelter in Newport. The owner plans to drive to Newport today to pick up his dog.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man accused of exposing himself at a drinking fountain in a Portland park says he was washing up there because he is homeless. Jamie Todd Hensler tells KGW he was washing in the fountain because no one cares about him. He was arrested Monday at Couch Park on charges of indecent exposure, disorderly conduct and misusing a drinking fountain.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a Portland woman met her killer through her volunteer work with a charity for the homeless. Niki Powell was found dead July 10 in her apartment. The man accused of killing her, Mark Daniel Beebout, is a registered sex offender who had been living as a transient. He was arrested in Seattle. KATU reports they met while she worked for Operation Nightwatch, serving food and coffee to the homeless at Saint Stephen’s Parish. Operation Nightwatch has a policy against volunteers fraternizing with or dating clients.
