SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners overcame bullpen problems to beat the Kansas City Royals 7-6 yesterday for a four-game sweep. Felix Hernandez shook off a line drive to his left wrist and threw seven strong innings. Seattle took the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Mike Carp led off with a double and pinch-runner Munenori Kawasaki scored when Royals reliever Jose Mijares threw Trayvon Robinson’s bunt down the right-field line.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Sidney Rice continues his recovery from offseason surgery on both of his shoulders at the Seahawks training camp. The Seahawks intend to take it very slow with Rice during training camp and avoid all contact for now. Rice says the focus is on being healthy for the season opener at Arizona.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Danny Califf scored his first goal of the season to give Chivas USA a 1-0 victory Saturday night that sent the Portland Timbers to their fifth consecutive defeat. The Timbers haven’t scored a goal since July 14 and are on an MLS-record 697-minute scoreless stretch on the road. Their next game is Aug. 5 at home against FC Dallas, who beat them 5-0 a week ago.
LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) – A 21-year-old Special Olympics softball player from Longview has died after collapsing during a regional tournament in Olympia, Wash. The Daily News of Longview reports that Charles Huff died of a heart attack. Huff, who was born with Down syndrome, graduated from high school this year. His softball team had won their first game of the day and was leading their second game when Huff collapsed. The rest of the game was called off.
