ALSEA, Ore. (AP) – A 9-year-old girl was at the wheel of a car that struck an 11-year-old girl in the driveway of a home near Alsea. Benton County deputies say the driver’s mother was in the passenger seat Saturday and they were traveling between the house and a garage sale they had set up near Highway 34. The 11-year-old suffered a leg injury. The mother, Melanie Steed-Hildebrand, was charged with reckless endangerment.
ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a driver making a left turn in Ashland told them he did not see the 90-year-old pedestrian in a crosswalk he struck and killed. Police say Anthony Kraft of Ashland struck his head and died of his injury at Rogue Valley Hospital. Prosecutors are reviewing the incident for possible charges against the driver.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A man has groped women or exposed himself four times this month on or around the University of Oregon campus. The university tells The Register-Guard that in the first two cases the man asked for directions then touched the victim’s chest. In the third case the man grabbed the woman from behind. In the latest case the man pulled down his pants and exposed himself.
ST. HELENS, Ore. (AP) – Columbia County deputies say a Springfield man took nearly $33,000 from his father after the man was taken to jail for allegedly assaulting his son. After his arrest on Aug.14, Dennis Newman of Scappoose told detectives he had a large amount of cash at his house. They took him back to get it, but by then the money and the 22-year-old son were gone. Detectives caught Freddie Sandusky just before he got on a plane to Hawaii. The Oregonian reports he had $19,000 with him and is believed to have spent or gambled away the rest.
