WHITE SALMON, Wash. (AP) – Fire crews are building containment lines around two fast-moving new wildfires threatening dozens of homes in south-central Washington along the Columbia River Gorge. Fire officials say residents of 30 homes were told to evacuate and warned another 400 residents they might have to leave.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – A federal crackdown on marijuana growing in Oregon and other western states has uprooted more than 1 million plants, about two-thirds of which were found on public land. The U.S. attorney’s office in Sacramento says the pot found on public lands was worth nearly $1.5 billion. More than three-quarters of the pot plants were found growing in California.

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – Firefighters rigged a sling from ropes, cables and a fire hose to rescue a horse that had become stuck in mud along the Tualatin River at Eagle Landing Park. Washington County Fire District 2 says the rider was taking his horse into the river to cool off yesterday when its hind legs became stuck in deep mud on the river’s edge. A companion called for help. Firefighters arrived and freed the horse in about an hour.

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) – The Yakima Bears have played their last game in Yakima before their move to Oregon. KAPP reports the Bears’ season ended with a 3-2 loss to Boise last night in Yakima County Stadium. The Northwest League team is moving to Hillsboro.
