PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A wildfire burning in Central Oregon is affecting the air quality in the Portland area. Department of Environmental Quality monitors in the Willamette Valley show moderately smoky conditions. The Oregonian reports the Pole Creek fire southwest of Sisters has burned 17,500 acres since igniting Sept. 9. It is 15 percent contained. The air quality in Sisters is hazardous. The American Red Cross has set up a shelter in the Sisters Elementary School for those with breathing problems.

THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police have identified a 50-year-old man fatally shot in a late night encounter with two police officers in The Dalles. Lt. Gregg Hastings says Gerald Arthur Stowell Jr. was shot late Monday night at a residence where city police had been dispatched to investigate a reported rape. The two officers who fired are on paid administrative leave.

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. (AP) – Authorities in an affluent area south of Portland have found no sign of a bearded man they say stabbed a man to death and fled. The search continued yesterday for the assailant following the Monday morning attack. The apparently random killing spooked others in the unincorporated neighborhood just outside Lake Oswego. Fifty-seven-year-old Frederick Hayes died in the attack. His wife was home but was not hurt.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police have identified a young woman who drowned in Summit Lake in southern Oregon’s Klamath County as a 21-year-old from San Francisco. KVAL-TV reports that police identified the woman yesterday as Charlene Ho, a University of Oregon student. They say she went to the lake Monday afternoon with two friends from the Eugene area.
