KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – Klamath County authorities say a county jail inmate who escaped while taking out the garbage was aided by two women, including his mother. Sheriff Tim Evinger says 25-year-old Kenneth Robert Banes was being escorted into the jail yard to dump garbage as part of a work detail early yesterday when he bolted and slipped through a hole in a fence. The sheriff later announced the arrests of Banes’ mother, 46-year-old Kathleen Joann Delaney, and 21-year-old Syndahl Lezza-Marrea McFarland.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Washington County sheriff’s office has identified a 24-year-old man fatally shot Tuesday night in Aloha, Ore., west of Portland. Sgt. Bob Ray identified the man yesterday as Forest Alig of Beaverton. The Oregonian reports that deputies found a 41-year-old Aloha man walking about a block away from the shooting site. Ray says they learned that the older man and Alig had been involved in a verbal dispute before Alig was shot. Ray says the investigation continues.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – A Benton County judge has given a Portland man custody of the mixed-breed, husky-Siberian dog at the center of a highly publicized custody dispute. The dog is being returned to Sam Hanson-Fleming. Judge Locke Williams said yesterday he has a valid claim to the dog, named Chase, who escaped in the spring of 2011. Jordan Biggs, an Oregon State University student, found him and named him Bear. After Hanson-Fleming saw them earlier this year, she refused to give him up.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State has reversed field on its “Wear Black” campaign. University President Ed Ray on encouraged fans to dress in black to a pair of upcoming football games. Ray’s announcement comes after school officials had suspended the campaign amid concerns that it encouraged racial insensitivity. Those worries stemmed from a 2007 incident in which some students wore black face paint and Afro wigs to a game. Oregon State’s school colors are black and orange.
