VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – A fire early today destroyed a former athletic club being converted into a Sikh temple in east Vancouver. Deputy Fire Marshal Chad Lawry told KOIN two construction workers were sleeping inside the building when the fire broke out got out safely. Lawry says a natural gas line may have fueled the flames and there’s no indication of a crime. But because the building is owned by a religious organization the BATF is helping investigate the cause.

NORTH BEND, Ore. (AP) – A 20-year-old Coast Guardsman has been arrested in North Bend on charges involving a 15-year-old girl. Police say Luke Kanada was jailed in Coos County Wednesday on charges that include rape and furnishing alcohol to a minor. The Register-Guard reports he has been stationed on a Coast Guard cutter and had contact with the girl over the summer.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A federal judge says a bullying lawsuit against the Harrisburg School District can go to trial. The judge upheld the family’s claim that school officials failed to protect a seventh-grade boy from physical abuse by other students. The Register-Guard reports the judge dismissed other claims of anti-gay harassment and discrimination because of the boy’s disability, Tourette’s syndrome. Trial is set for Dec. 4.
