PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Clackamas County sheriff’s spokesman says a 13-person search team has begun a trek up Oregon’s Mount Hood to rescue a stranded 30-year-old climber who used his cell phone to contact rescuers and post messages on his Facebook page. Deputy Marcus Mendoza says the climber identified himself as Jeff Kish of Portland. On Wednesday evening, the spokesman said Kish had not only been in contact with deputies via cell phone, but told search coordinators he’d been using the phone to update Facebook.
COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – The Coast Guard reports it has recovered a man’s body near the Coos Bay jetty on the southern Oregon coast. The World newspaper says the Coast Guard retrieved the body Wednesday afternoon at the request of the Coos County sheriff’s office. Petty Officer Shawn Eggert says the man was in his mid-60s and was not wearing a life vest. No debris or overturned boat was found to indicate that the man had been involved in a boating accident.
VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – A 73-year-old Vancouver, Wash., man accused of fatally shooting his wife after learning her plans for the couple’s money after their divorce has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. The Columbian reports that Victor Frye is accused of shooting his 67-year-old wife, Nita, twice on Nov. 12. The couple had been married more than 20 years. On Wednesday Clark County Superior Court Judge Daniel Stahnke set Frye’s bail at $500,000.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A 20-year-old Oregon man accused of giving illegal tattoos to more than a half dozen underage girls who attend a Eugene-area high school has pleaded not guilty. The Register-Guard reports that Brett Allen Breding of the small town of Crow entered his pleas Wednesday in Circuit Court to six counts of tattooing without a license and four counts of operating a facility without a tattoo license. Each count carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail.
