SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Legislature is meeting in special session today to consider a tax deal for Nike in return for jobs. Gov. John Kitzhaber called for emergency legislation to prevent the Beaverton company from making a major expansion in another state.
WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama says he won’t go after Washington state and Colorado for legalizing marijuana. In a Barbara Walters interview airing today on ABC, Obama is asked whether he supports making pot legal. He says, “I wouldn’t go that far.” But the president won’t pursue the issue in the states where voters legalized the use of marijuana in the November elections. Marijuana remains illegal under federal law. Pot officially became legal in Washington state last week; it becomes legal in Colorado next month.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Police in Eugene say two men have been arrested in burglaries earlier this year at two small Oregon post offices. The Register-Guard reports that police were investigating other burglaries when they found evidence that linked Christopher Yandell and Allen Widmer to crimes at the Elmira and Marcola post offices. Police say that evidence included more than $2,000 in stamps, a postal tote and text messages.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The IRS is proposing guidelines on what income and benefits of Alaska Natives and Native Americans are subject to taxation. Among other things, the guidance prohibits levies on honoraria to a shaman but allows assessments on per-capita payments from gambling revenues to tribal members. The proposed taxing guidance isn’t final and can be commented on by tribes through next June.
