FRESNO, Calif. (AP) – After tracking him for a year, California wildlife officials say that the lone gray wolf who migrated from Oregon likes to travel more than most. Since he took off from his pack in northeast Oregon the wolf has traveled more than 3,000 miles. Most gray wolves stay within 100 miles of where they were born. He’s wearing a GPS tracking collar, which enables wildlife officials to keep up with him as he follows migrating deer in northeast California.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Some people spend $27,000 on a car or the down payment for a house. A retired Salem businessman spent it all on a bottle of booze. KPTV reports that Lyle Shellenberg bought the limited edition bottle of Glenfiddich Scotch whisky on Friday at a liquor store in Portland, becoming one of six people in the country to own a 50-year-old bottle produced in quantities of 50 each year. Shellenberg says he plans to drink it next year with his family.
TUALATIN, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say gun sales are up in Oregon. KATU-TV reports that Oregon State Police say the number of background checks performed on potential gun owners from Dec. 14 through Jan. 3 more than doubled from the same period a year ago, to more than 32,000. The rise follows the Clackamas Town Center shooting and the Connecticut school massacre.
UNDATED (AP) — Chip Kelly is staying at Oregon. A person with knowledge of the decision confirmed last night that Kelly is passing up a chance to coach in the NFL to remain with the Ducks. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Oregon and Kelly haven’t formally announced the decision. Kelly had lengthy interviews with the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles, and also talked to the Buffalo Bills.
