LIMA, Peru (AP) – Five U.S. citizens are among seven people killed in the crash of a U.S.-owned cargo helicopter in the Peruvian jungle. The heavy-lift chopper that crashed yesterday was owned by Columbia Helicopters of Portland. The company vice-president confirms the deaths, telling The Associated Press the five dead Americans were employees of the company.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A federal court trial begins today in Portland for a man accused of providing heroin that killed a Milwaukie High School student. The 17-year-old, Toviy Sinyayev, was found by his mother last April in a coma. A 42-year-old Milwaukie man, Aleksey Alexandrovich Dzyuba, is charged with distributing heroin resulting in death. The charge is known as the Len Bias Law, after a University of Maryland basketball player who died in 1986 of a cocaine overdose.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A soldier accused of beating a 75-year-old driver in a road rage clash in Portland has been sentenced to 14 months in prison. Aaron Altabef pleaded guilty last month to attempted assault as part of a plea agreement. He’s a member of the Oregon Army National Guard who served in Afghanistan in 2011. Last May Altabef was involved in a confrontation with Randall McMichael of Wilsonville in traffic.
REDMOND, Ore. (AP) – The Redmond City Council meets tonight to consider spending $119,000 over the next three years on security cameras. They would be installed around the city, mostly at parks, to deter vandalism and other crimes.
