Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A federal judge has convicted an Oregon man of providing heroin that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old high school student. Aleksey Dzyuba was prosecuted under a federal law that carries a penalty of 20 years to life in prison if the drugs distributed result in death or serious injury. The 43-year-old suburban Milwaukie man had been accused of supplying heroin last April to Toviy Sinyayev, who lapsed into a coma and died. Dzyuba, convicted yesterday, will be sentenced on April 2.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A convicted killer who prosecutors say fatally beat his girlfriend with the legs of a coffee table has been sentenced to about eight years in prison. The Oregonian says John Coleman Hardaway was originally charged with aggravated murder in the 2011 death of Barbara Smalley. She died about a week after the beating in a suburban Gresham apartment. He recently entered modified guilty pleas to reduced charges of second-degree manslaughter and first-degree assault.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Jury selection has begun in the trial of a man accused of plotting to blow up Portland’s Christmas-tree lighting ceremony. It’s expected to feature the testimony of the two men whom Mohamed Mohamud thought were his jihadist co-conspirators. They were in fact undercover FBI agents leading the sting of Mohamud that led to his November 2010 arrest. The two men will be allowed to wear disguises when they enter and leave the courthouse, and their faces will not be visible to the public when they testify. The bomb was a fake, and Mohamud was arrested moments after he tried to detonate it.

HERMISTON, Ore. (AP) – A Umatilla County, Ore., grand jury has ruled that Hermiston police officers were justified in fatally shooting a bank robbery suspect they had followed into a liquor store. County District Attorney Dan Primus has said that 55-year-old Gregory Shafer of the Hermiston area pointed what appeared to be a semiautomatic handgun at two officers on New Year’s Eve. KNDU-TV reports Shafer actually had a realistic looking BB gun. Still, the grand jury found that deadly force was justified.
