GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A woman who spent a decade as a fugitive from the largest ecoterrorism investigation in U.S. history is due in federal court in Eugene to face conspiracy and arson charges. Court records show 39-year-old Rebecca Rubin, a Canadian citizen, is charged in a federal indictment of being a member of an ecoterrorism group known as The Family based in Eugene, which investigators blame for 20 fires across the West from 1996 to 2001 that did $40 million damage. The group targeted a ski resort in Colorado, wild horse corrals in Oregon and Northern California, and lumber mills and U.S. Forest Service offices in Oregon.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Fire and Rescue says a fire at a transient camp led to a series of problems. The fire yesterday near Interstate 205 and the airport caused a guy wire to snap and a utility pole to fall, bringing down high-voltage lines. The power lines fell on several cars and hung low over railroad tracks, blocking trains. Fluid leaked from an electrical transformer. A hazmat team cleaned up the spill while a PP&L crew restored power. There were no injuries.
ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) – Ashland police say three members of the high school football team and a fourth youth have been charged after an investigation into hazing that involved attempted sexual assaults at a summer football camp. They say all four are charged with coercion, two with conspiracy and one, who is not a student at the high school, with attempted sexual penetration with a finger.
HONOLULU (AP) – The Congressional Gold Medal awarded last year to Japanese-Americans who served in World War II is going on a national tour. An exhibition featuring the medal will open tomorrow in New Orleans. It will then travel to museums in six cities, including Portland.
