PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say an Oregon man has been extradited to California to face charges he allegedly stabbed a woman to death in her Southern California apartment in 1990. Prosecutors say 74-year-old Charles Lee Clark of Beavercreek returned to Orange County yesterday and is being held on $5 million bail. Clark is accused of renting a room in 36-year-old Kathleen Witkowski’s apartment while he was out on bail for a federal bank robbery in early 1990, then stabbing her with a knife.

KEIZER, Ore. (AP) – A police officer has shot a fugitive wanted on sex abuse charges after a chase from Salem into neighboring Keizer. Police said yesterday that officers blocked a pickup truck that 29-year old Gabriel D. Diaz of Salem was driving, and witnesses saw him get out of the truck with an object in his hand. Police reported that Salem Officer Bruce Fineran fired, hitting Diaz. Police haven’t said what Diaz was seen holding. There was no immediate information about his condition.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Corrections Department officials say a 49-year-old inmate at a state prison in central Oregon has died unexpectedly in a hospital. Agency spokeswoman Liz Craig said yesterday that an Oregon State Police investigation determined the death of John Derrick Stafford was not related to a crime. Stafford was an inmate at the Deer Ridge Correctional Institution in Madras. He was taken to an area hospital on Monday with unspecified medical issues and died Monday afternoon.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon State Police wildlife trooper has cited a 16-year-old boy for killing a protected red-tailed hawk near Klamath Falls in southern Oregon. Police say the trooper responded Sunday to a landowner’s report that two juveniles had been involved in shooting a hawk on his property and then tried to run off. The trooper found the dead bird and contacted the juveniles, citing one of them for unlawful taking of a protected species. His name wasn’t released.
