Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A lawyer for Nike told Gov. John Kitzhaber the company was looking to expand outside Oregon unless the state promised tax certainty. The statement was made in an email in early December that was released yesterday in response to a public records request from The Oregonian newspaper. The governor called lawmakers to Salem for a special session that promised to hold Nike taxes steady in return for an investment of at least $150 million and 500 jobs. That agreement was signed before the end of the year.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A man who fatally shot a drug robber a year ago at his home in Eugene admitted in court yesterday that he continued to use and sell heroin. Tyler Jon Norman pleaded guilty to felony counts of heroin possession and delivery for three incidents last spring when police caught him with the drug. The Register-Guard reports the judge gave him one last chance to avoid prison by approving a plea agreement that calls for up to 20 days in jail. Another drug conviction would send the 28-year-old to prison for a year-and-a-half. Norman was not prosecuted for last year’s fatal shooting because it was self-defense.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A prosecutor says a former Prineville man sought in a fatal 1995 traffic crash in Marion County has pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and DUI, and been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Deputy District Attorney Amy Queen says Jose Luis Sanchez entered his pleas yesterday. After Sanchez was arrested last year for entering the country illegally from Mexico, a fingerprint check showed he was sought on a vehicular homicide warrant out of Oregon.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Proposed budget cuts for Portland police would eliminate the mounted horse patrol unit and the school police program. The proposed budget for the next fiscal year also would end police funding for jail fingerprint technicians and deputy district attorneys. Nearly 30 unfilled positions for officers would be left vacant. Final budget decisions will be up to the city council.
