Superintendent Search Results Nearing

Members of the Siuslaw School Board met in private executive session multiple times over the past two weeks to work on negotiations with their first choice to replace retiring Superintendent Jeff Davis.

Board Chair Paul Burns says they are still working through the final details, but he hopes to be able to make an announcement this evening.

If no agreement is finalized, Burns said they will call a special meeting within a few days to announce the selection.

The board identified three finalists last month… Lane County resident Shawn Wiencek (WYNE-seck); Curtis Scholl, who currently works in the Salem-Keizer School District; and former Seattle resident Susan Follmer who currently lives and works in Venezuela.

The regular monthly session of the 97-J school board is this evening, 6:30 at the district office on Oak Street.

Washington fugitive captured in Lincoln County

A man suspected of killing his grandparents just hours after his release from prison last week in Washington State is hospitalized in serious condition after his capture at a beach-side motel in Lincoln City.

A property manager recognized Michael Boysen after he checked into the motel under his own name Monday night.  Tactical officers from several agencies surrounded the facility in the Taft district of Lincoln City.  After a tense day-long standoff yesterday they breached the door of the room.

They found Boysen on the floor with apparently serious self-inflicted cuts.

Traffic on Highway 101 was restricted and surrounding streets were closed near the Westshore Oceanfront Motel during the standoff.

Dialysis relief in sight

Work on a new dialysis clinic that will serve patients in the Florence area is nearing completion.  City of Florence officials announced this week the “certificate of occupancy” for the building has been issued to Fresnius Medical Center Florence.  The new clinic on Kingwood Street just north of 27th will serve dialysis patients who have been making trips three-times each week to Coos Bay or Eugene for treatment.  It’s expected to open in the next 30 days.

Fuel prices up and down

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded increased by two cents locally, but decreased by the same amount nationally this past week.  Florence’s average this morning was at $3.74 a gallon while the national average, as measured by Triple-A came down to $3.70.  Oregon’s average price remained steady at $3.79 a gallon.
