Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Police say an Oregon college student visiting his family in San Francisco was shot and killed a block from his family’s home after a gunman approached him and asked if he was a member of a gang. Nineteen-year-old Jacob Valdiviezo was a sophomore at Lewis and Clark University. Police say he was shot after the gunman got out of a car and walked up to Valdiviezo and a friend as they walked home at around 3 a.m. Saturday.

COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – The Coos Bay City Council has called a special meeting for tomorrow night to discuss the controversy over a cross displayed in a city park as part of a Vietnam War memorial. Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation — acting in response to complaints from residents — has demanded the city remove the cross, saying its display on public property is illegal. The Register-Guard says so many people are expected tomorrow that the council moved the meeting to the larger Coos Bay Public Library.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a man appears to have fatally shot himself yesterday afternoon following a traffic stop on Highway 126 west of Eugene. State police say a sergeant stopped a car for a speeding about five miles west of Veneta. As the sergeant got out of his car, the other vehicle sped forward, hit a ditch and crashed into a tree. Police say the man had apparently shot himself.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Officials in Benton County are seeking to provide formal fire protection to a rural swatch of about 27,000 acres south of Corvallis. But not everyone living in the sparsely settled area of scattered farms wants to be part of a fire protection district. The Corvallis Times reports that many of the area’s farmers have makeshift firefighting equipment and have been providing their own fire protection.
