OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners are set to take on the Oakland A’s on opening day today. Hernandez is fresh off his signing of a $175 million, seven-year contract last month that briefly made him baseball’s highest-paid pitcher. Hernandez, who turns 27 on April 8, went 13-9 with a 3.06 ERA in 33 starts last season — two years after capturing the AL Cy Young award.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have designated outfielder Casper Wells for assignment and kept Jason Bay on the opening day roster as the club’s fifth outfielder. Seattle also yesterday selected the contract of right-hander D.J. Mitchell to the 40-man roster, then optioned him to Triple-A Tacoma.
SANDY, Utah (AP) – Real Salt Lake claimed its first home victory of the 2013 season with a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders Saturday night. Brad Evans scored for the Sounders, who remain winless a month into the 2013 season. Robbie Findley and Luis Gil each scored first-half goals for RSL.
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) – The Portland Timbers rallied from a two-goal second-half deficit to tie the Colorado Rapids 2-2 Saturday night. Will Johnson scored two goals, including a penalty kick in the 71st minute for the Timbers, who have never won in Colorado, going 0-3-1 in their matches at the Rapids.
