PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office says it will temporarily stop processing new concealed handgun license applications for residents of Washington state. Lt. Steve Alexander says the suspension will give the county’s licensing unit time to play catch-up on what’s now a four-month backlog in applications.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Eastern Oregon ranchers are asking the state Legislature for more authority to kill wolves that threaten their livestock, re-energizing a longstanding debate as the wolf population increases. Ranchers told a House committee yesterday that it’s not enough to kill wolves caught in the act of attacking livestock. Environmentalists warned that wolf populations might dwindle if ranchers get more latitude to kill the predators.
HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – A 62-year-old Oregon high school special education teacher accused of pummeling a teen in what was described as a road rage incident has pleaded not guilty. KATU-TV reports that Bruce Clevenger’s trial is set to start next month. Washington County deputies say witnesses told them that Clevenger swerved into 17-year-old Alexander Hoang’s car on April 4 in Aloha, got out of his own car and punched the young man in the face. Clevenger is on paid leave from Liberty High School pending the outcome of the case.
COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – The Coos County sheriff’s office says a 25-year-old woman has drowned after she was trapped underwater on southern Oregon’s Coquille (Co-KEEL) River. The Oregonian reports that Coquille Watershed Association employee Kristle Volin of Coos Bay was working yesterday with an Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife employee on the river. A fallen tree reportedly capsized Volin’s pontoon boat and her life jacket snagged. Rescuers had to deflate the boat to free her.
