SEATTLE (AP) – Kyle Seager hit a two-out RBI double off Justin Verlander in the seventh inning to break a scoreless tie and help give the Seattle Mariners a 2-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers yesterday. The teams played the series finale about 13 hours after the Tigers’ 2-1 victory in 14 innings in a game that had a combined 40 strikeouts and had Justin Smoak tagged out at home in a collision with catcher Brayan Pena for the final out. Verlander (2-2), who threw 126 pitches in seven innings, gave up a two-out single to Robert Andino.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The Seattle Seahawks will play at least four prime-time games next season and will open Sept. 8 at Carolina. The Seahawks schedule was released on Wednesday. After opening at Carolina, the Seahawks will return home to host San Francisco in the first of Seattle’s four prime-time games. Seattle will travel to Arizona in Week 7 for a Thursday night game, and will play at St. Louis (Week 8) and host New Orleans (Week 13) in Monday night games. Seattle will have its bye in Week 12.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Trail Blazers’ season certainly wasn’t what the team had hoped for, but there’s reason for optimism. Point guard Damian Lillard led all NBA rookies with an average of 19 points and 6.5 assists. He broke the rookie record for 3-pointers with 185, and he led the entire league in minutes with 3,167. He was named NBA Rookie of the Month for each of the first five months of the season. Lillard’s play was the bright spot in a season that ended with a 13-game losing streak.
SEATTLE (AP) – Washington leading scorer C.J. Wilcox has bypassed a chance to enter the NBA draft and will return for his senior season. Many draft projections had Wilcox being taken in the second round. Wilcox led the Huskies averaging 16.8 points per game, good for sixth in the Pac-12. He was a second-team all-Pac-12 selection and played most of the conference season while battling a foot injury. He topped 20 points in 14 games and was the Huskies’ leading scorer in 22 of their 34 games.
CHICAGO (AP) – The new women’s professional soccer league has landed a TV deal with FOX Sports. Six regular-season matches will be shown in July, followed by two playoff matches and the championship on Aug. 31. The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and FOX Sports Media Group announced the one-year deal yesterday, five days after the start of the new eight-team league. Teams play in Boston, Chicago, Rochester, N.Y., Piscataway, N.J., and Washington, D.C., plus Kansas City, Portland and Seattle.
