LA PINE, Ore. (AP) – The La Pine High School cheerleading coach accused of having sex with a 17-year-old male student has been arrested on charges of sex abuse and sexual misconduct. Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies say a school staff member reported rumors in March about Nicole Mickelson. KTVZ reports the 30-year-old La Pine woman was arrested April 18 on sex charges. The Bend-La Pine School District says she has resigned.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Internet shoppers are moving closer to paying sales taxes for their online purchases. But the fight is far from over. The Senate voted yesterday to advance a bill that would impose state and local sales taxes on purchases made over the Internet. Senate Democratic leaders wanted to finish work on the bill this week, before leaving town for the recess. But they were blocked by a handful of senators from states without sales taxes. Oregon is one of four states with no sales tax.

OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – A former Clackamas County elections worker has been sentenced to 90 days in jail after admitting she tampered with two ballots in the days before the November election. Deanna Swenson of Oregon City was arrested last fall after another election worker saw her filling in ovals on ballots left empty by voters. Swenson pleaded guilty yesterday to official misconduct and unlawfully altering a cast ballot.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) – The Chicago Bears have selected Oregon guard Kyle Long with the 20th pick in the NFL draft. Some mock drafts had the Bears going with linebackers but instead they decided to add to an offensive line that has ranked among the worst in recent years. Long is the son of former Raiders star Howie Long and the brother of St. Louis Rams defensive end Chris Long.
