RENTON, Wash. (AP) – John Schneider has mapped out his vision for the Seahawks’ future and it involves detailed plans for keeping his team a contender for more than just one season. The Seahawks didn’t have a pick in the first round of the NFL draft last night. That’s fine by Schneider, who believes the Seahawks are in an enviable position for several reasons and will pick later.

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) – The Miami Dolphins have traded up to the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL draft to select outside linebacker Dion Jordan of Oregon. The Dolphins swung a trade last night with Oakland, giving up the No. 12 and No. 42 overall choices. The latter was the first of two picks Miami had in Round 2. The 6-foot-6, 240-pound Jordan had 14.5 sacks in 45 games with Oregon.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) – The Chicago Bears have selected Oregon guard Kyle Long with the 20th pick in the NFL draft. The Bears decided to add to an offensive line that has ranked among the worst in recent years. Long is the son of former Raiders star Howie Long and the brother of St. Louis Rams defensive end Chris Long.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) – The Atlanta Falcons have traded up to select Washington cornerback Desmond Trufant in the NFL draft. The Falcons worked a deal with the St. Louis Rams to land the 22nd overall pick. They swapped the 30th selection and also gave up their third- and six-round picks. Trufant fills a major need after Atlanta lost three cornerbacks in the offseason.

SEATTLE (AP) – Carlos Peguero hit a mammoth homer in his first at-bat of the season and Kyle Seager had a two-run homer to help the Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-0 last night. Peguero hit his solo shot on a 3-2 pitch from Garrett Richards (1-1) in the third, 451 feet to deep center. Rookie Brandon Maurer went 6 1-3 innings to pick up the victory.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – The NBA committee deciding if the Sacramento Kings should be sold and relocated to Seattle will hold a meeting by conference call Monday. An NBA spokesman confirms the panel consisting of 12 league owners will convene on a phone call. Whenever the panel issues a recommendation, NBA owners will have at least seven business days before a vote.
