SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon lawmakers don’t want the state to get stuck with the bill if a wave-energy company installs equipment off shore and then goes belly up. The state Senate voted yesterday to require that companies experimenting with wave energy in Oregon’s territorial waters show they have enough money to recover their equipment when they’re done with it.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The state House has passed two bills targeting protesters who chain themselves to machinery or block roads to interfere with logging operations in state forests. One bill would make it a crime to interfere with logging. All offenses after the first would be felonies. The other bill would let logging companies sue demonstrators who interfere with logging operations.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – The Jefferson County sheriff says a Madras man has been charged with murder and manslaughter in the death of his friend’s brother during a rabbit hunting trip. It happened Sunday near the Crooked River National Grassland south of Madras. Sheriff Jim Adkins says the alleged shooter, 24-year-old Montana Silk Marlett, fled after the shooting but was later caught.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An annual report shows Oregon enrolls relatively few children in state-funded prekindergarten classes but spends more money per student than almost every other state. The rankings from the National Institute for Early Education Research are almost identical to the ones Oregon has received in previous years. Oregon spends $8,500 per student.
