ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – The Benton County district attorney says a citizen’s tip last week that a student planned to set off bombs at an Oregon school may have prevented mass murder. John Haroldson says the tip led to seizure of six homemade bombs allegedly made by 17-year-old Grant Alan Acord, a student at West Albany High School. Haroldson says the documents included a date when the youth might have used the bombs in a plan modeled after a 1999 rampage at a Colorado high school.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The co-owner of a Eugene restaurant has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a pedestrian struck by a car. The Register-Guard reports 33-year-old Kiyallah Li Heatherstone also is charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving. Police say Heatherstone was behind the wheel of a car that struck Travis Alverson.
ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says an Albany man has been charged with shooting the head off a goat. The Albany Democrat-Herald reports 61-year-old Arnold Farley is charged with aggravated animal abuse, unlawful use of a firearm, criminal mischief and reckless endangering. The sheriff’s office says Farley fired a .30-caliber rifle Friday at the animal.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A crowd in Portland estimated at 2,000 to 3,000 joined others around the world to protest genetically modified foods. The Portland crowd walked and listened to speakers Saturday around the Lloyd Center. The Oregonian reports other Oregon protests took place in Eugene, Medford, Grants Pass, Bend, Baker City, Prineville, Redmond and Coos Bay.
