OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – The Oakland Athletics avoided a sweep with a 10-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners yesterday. Bartolo Colon worked seven strong innings to win his sixth straight decision and Josh Reddick homered and matched a career high with four hits. Sean Smith and Brandon Moss each homered and drove in two runs for the Athletics.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) – Tina Thompson scored 17 points as the Seattle Storm leapt past the Connecticut Sun 78-66 yesterday. Camille Little had 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead. Tanisha Wright added 13 points and five rebounds for the Storm.

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) – Greg Biffle raced to his second straight Sprint Cup victory at Michigan International Speedway, easily holding off Kevin Harvick after points leader Jimmie Johnson smacked the wall in the final laps yesterday. It was the 1,000th victory for Ford across NASCAR’s three national series – Cup, Nationwide and Truck. It was Biffle’s first win since he overtook Johnson to win at MIS in August.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – A sewage problem at the Oakland Coliseum forced the Seattle Mariners and Athletics to use the same locker room after Sunday’s game. The pipes backed up on the lower levels of the stadium during Oakland’s 10-2 victory, creating a stink. Coliseum officials said the plumbing system was overtaxed by the more than 171,000 fans in attendance.
