(AP) – Oregon’s public universities and community colleges will be among the first in line to get more money if a budget compromise results in more revenue and lower employee pension costs. The state House is scheduled to vote tomorrow on two-year spending plans for universities and community colleges. University officials say tuition increases could be reduced or even eliminated.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The driver accused of fatally hitting a man attempting to dribble a ball from Seattle to Brazil in time for the 2014 World Cup was released from jail yesterday, after telling the court he is in hospice. Scott Hiatt of Neskowin was charged with criminally negligent homicide in the death of Richard Swanson, who was struck while walking along U.S. 101 last month. Prosecutors said Hiatt is also giving up his driver’s license.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A married Oregon couple faces charges after authorities say they bought a gun for two people accused of a three-state killing spree. Kimberly Wyatt pleaded not guilty yesterday to several counts, including failing to report the alleged kidnapping and slaying of a teenager. Wyatt and her husband, Corey, who is jailed on unrelated charges, are also accused of helping them avoid capture.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say a fisherman who dove into the Columbia River after his pole has drowned. The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office says the report came in after noon yesterday that 60-year-old John Eugene Deranleau of Portland was unconscious after searching for his pole.
