SALEM, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon legislative committee has advanced a bill they say will meet a goal of curbing the state’s growing prison population within the next five years. The Joint Committee on Public Safety advanced the bill yesterday with one lawmaker dissenting. The latest version of the legislation includes a plan to reduce sentences established in 2008 for certain drug and property crimes.

ONTARIO, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say a Nevada man died in the crash of a small plane in Eastern Oregon near the Idaho border. The pilot was identified as 52-year-old Edward Claugus of Incline Village, Nevada. He was the only person aboard. Police say the plane crashed after hitting power lines near the Owyhee (oh-WEYE-hee) Dam. Utility crews worked overnight to fix the power line.

COQUILLE, Ore. (AP) – A 38-year-old man has been arrested in a case that began earlier this month when a State Police bomb squad destroyed improvised explosive devices found in a Coos Bay home. The World newspaper reports that Coos County sheriff’s deputies arrested 38-year-old Jay Yarbrough on Sunday near Powers. He had been sought on explosives and other charges, including domestic assault.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon’s chief education officer is leaving to run a New York City college. Trustees at the City University of New York yesterday appointed Rudy Crew president of Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn. Crew spent less than a year as Oregon’s first chief education officer, overseeing Gov. John Kitzhaber’s effort to improve student achievement.
