CINCINNATI (AP) – Joe Saunders pitched seven efficient innings and Nick Franklin and Justin Smoak each homered to lift the Seattle Mariners yesterday to a 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. A day after the Reds scored 13 runs, they managed just six hits and a run off Saunders. Tom Wilhelmsen was perfect in the ninth for his 18th save, helping the Mariners pick up their second win of the three-game series.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Bernardo Anor’s early goal helped the Columbus Crew defeat Portland 1-0 yesterday, ending the Timbers’ 15-game unbeaten streak. Anor scored in the fourth minute off a restart from Federico Higuain. But Higuain failed to increase the lead seven minutes later, missing his second penalty kick in six attempts this season by shooting the ball left of the net.
