SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon lawmakers wrapped up their work and adjourned yesterday without a deal to increase taxes and cut pension costs. But an improving economy allowed for an end to years of painful budget slashing and brought an increase in school funding. Majority Democrats achieved their goal of $6.75 billion in school funding.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man accused of robbing the same Portland bank three times is pleading not guilty in federal court. Sixty-year-old Herbert Scruggs is accused of taking nearly $11,000 from the Albina Community Bank in robberies in June of 2011, and April and June of this year. The Oregonian reports he was arrested after the latest robbery when officers spotted a getaway car.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police arrested a man they call the Pepperoni Bandit. The 18-year-old is accused of robbing markets on Saturday and Monday and threatening clerks with a machete. Among the items he took were soda, doughnuts, candy and pepperoni sticks. Police say he had a machete in his pants when he was arrested.
CENTRAL POINT, Ore. (AP) – Traffic was slowed to a crawl on a Central Point street yesterday by a large turtle. Several drivers called police, worried that the turtle would be run over. The Mail Tribune reports it was identified as an African spurred tortoise that weighed about 30 pounds. Police gave the turtle to a veterinary hospital while they try to find the owner
