Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon parole board has denied release for a man who killed another man with a hatchet 26 years ago in Portland. The board said yesterday that Kevin Roper remains a threat to society, but it set a potential release date for him in 2016. The Oregonian reports Roper was among 30 killers affected by a 2011 state supreme court ruling that determined they had been in prison too long without a parole review.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A house fire in Portland also burned several motorcycles. Portland Fire and Rescue says the fire last night spread from a burn barrel, ignited the motorcycles and extended into the home. All the occupants, including four dogs, safely escaped.

ESTACADA, Ore. (AP) – Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies say they’ve arrested an 82-year-old Estacada man accused of firing a shotgun at two teens riding ATVs near his home last evening. They say the two 16-year-old boys told them they were riding up and down a shared driveway at the time. No one was hit. A sheriff’s spokesman says Edwin Fritchie was arrested for investigation of menacing and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police in Portland say an officer shot and killed a pit bull that grabbed a smaller dog and refused to let go. Sgt. Pete Simpson says officers yesterday afternoon found bystanders hitting the larger dog in an effort to get it to drop the smaller dog. Simpson says an officer used pepper spray on the dog but that had no effect. He said the big dog was about to kill the smaller one and was a danger to bystanders, so the officer fired.
