Police Uncover Possible Murder Solicitation Plot
A Florence man is in the Lane County Jail possibly facing two charges of solicitation to commit murder after allegedly attempting to find someone to kill his ex-wife and her boyfriend.
46-year old Brian Raymond Frelich, of Number-9 Park Village Loop, also faces charges of Menacing and Unlawful Use of a Firearm.
Police have not released the identity of the two alleged intended victims.
Frelich was arrested Monday and his home was searched by members of the Lane County Interagency Narcotics Team who seized several firearms along with additional evidence.
He was lodged in the Lane County Jail. He was arraigned on the weapon and menacing charges, but officials have not yet formally filed the solicitation to commit murder charges.
The investigation is ongoing and police have not released any further information.
Fire Blackens 2 Acres on South Jetty Road
Fire crews from a variety of different agencies worked four hours overnight Tuesday along South Jetty Road to contain a blaze that cleared about two-acres of beach grass and scrub brush.
Siuslaw National Forest spokesperson Jamie Schnick said crews were dispatched about ten pm Tuesday. With the assistance of Siuslaw Valley Fire and Oregon Department of Forestry crews they were able to contain the fire by two AM. Crews remained in the area Wednesday to extinguish any remaining hot spots.
Schnick said the fire appears to be human caused and is under investigation. Fire officials say local crews are working at minimum staffing as many of their crews have been dispatched to some of the larger fires burning in the eastern and southern portions of Oregon.
O&C Bill Clears Committee
The U.S. House Natural Resources Committee advanced legislation aimed at increasing timber harvests on former Oregon and California Railroad lands in Western Oregon.
The provision was included in a sweeping federal forests bill and was drafted by Oregon Democrats Peter DeFazio and Kurt Schrader along with Republican Greg Walden.
Western Oregon counties have been struggling economically with the two-decade decline in logging brought on in part by tighter environmental restrictions.
If ultimately approved, it would transfer regulation of about 1.5-million acres of O&C Land to the State of Oregon.

A Taste of Emergency
Area residents will get yet another opportunity to learn how they can adequately prepare for a wide-spread disaster next Friday night with a tasting of long-storage-life foods. The emergency rations are specifically designed for emergency and disaster use and are just one option available for residents with an eye on being self-sufficient in the event of an earthquake, tsunami or devastating storm.
The West Lane Emergency Operations Group will offer two sessions of the monthly “Living on Shaky Ground” classes this month. Normally on the second Saturday of the month, a Friday evening class has been added for August 9th.
Education Coordinator Joan Edwards says there is a wide variety of emergency rations available. She’ll have just a few of them for attendees to sample… along with ordering information and… perhaps most importantly… storage tips.
There’s no cost for the class, but pre-registration is advised by calling Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue.
