WASHINGTON (AP) – A coalition of education and civil rights activists says millions of at-risk students could fall through the cracks as a result of the Obama administration’s decision to allow states to ignore parts of the No Child Left Behind education law. The Campaign for High School Equity released a study yesterday analyzing the impact of the waivers, which states like Oregon got in exchange for plans to better prepare students for college or career. The study says education officials aren’t tracking at-risk students as carefully as before.

LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) – The Coast Guard says a 75-foot fishing boat that sank yesterday in the Columbia River west of Longview, Wash., has as much as 600 gallons of diesel on board and some of that fuel has spilled into the river. Petty Officer 1st Class David Mosley says an estimated 50 to 100 gallons of fuel has been released. Mosley says the owner of the wood-hulled trawler Granby reported the sinking and helped put out containment boom to minimize spill damage.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – The husband of a woman found beaten along a trail in Pendleton says she will have a lot of relearning to do once she’s out of an induced coma. Dan Lange tells the East Oregonian that his wife, Karen, faces many uncertainties. An attacker beat her on Aug. 9 with a length of pipe. Investigators say a transient is a person of interest and DNA from the attack is linked to a killing last year.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – Klamath County authorities say they’ve arrested one man in connection with a body found outside Chiloquin, Ore., and they’re trying to locate a “person of interest.” County District Attorney Rob Patridge said yesterday 33-year-old David Guy Mogelburg turned himself in and has been arrested for investigation of murder and arson.
