SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber plans to continue talks today with House and Senate leaders in an attempt to reach an agreement on tax increases and public-employee pension cuts. No deal was reached after a day-long meeting yesterday, but both Republicans and Democrats emerged sounding optimistic. An agreement could lead to a Sept. 30 special session.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Linn County Sheriff says a 54-year-old Florida man died in the crash of a private logging helicopter yesterday afternoon near Detroit, Ore. Witnesses say the helicopter had just picked up a load of logs when the logs fell, then the rotor separated from the helicopter. The pilot was identified as William Colantuono of Indialantic, Fla.
ONTARIO, Ore. (AP) – Ontario’s West Park Plaza mall may be getting a new lease on life. A Houston company that salvages shopping centers in small markets is interested in the mall, which never recovered from the collapse of the Oregon-based Emporium retail chain a decade ago. The Argus Observer reports the current occupants of the mall are a church, a mental health services agency and an appliance store.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 92-year-old Coast Guard veteran from Illinois is returning a photo of a pretty red-haired girl that he lifted from her Portland home on a date in 1943. The Oregonian reports that Jim Williams kept the photo of Ruby Ruff through his service in World War II, but always felt bad about taking it. He returned a copy yesterday to Ruff, who is also 92.
