SALEM, Ore. (AP) – State Police say charges have been filed against five people involved in a logging protest yesterday on the face of the Oregon Capitol dome. They are against plans for the Elliott State Forest in the Coast Range near Coos Bay that include selling some of its acreage. Two used ropes to descend from the top of the dome yesterday and unfurl a banner criticizing Gov. John Kitzhaber. They were identified as 22-year-old Benjamin Jones and 26-year-old Erin Michele Grady, both of Eugene.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – The Senate has passed a bill that includes a one-year extension of a federal subsidy for timber counties, including about $100 million for Oregon. Sen. Ron Wyden had added the extension of the now expired Secure Rural Schools program to a bill addressing the impeding shutdown of the national helium reserve, which passed the Senate yesterday. The House has passed a helium bill, but without the timber county funding – and the fate of that program remains uncertain.

LACEY, Wash. (AP) – A Spanaway, Wash., man has been arrested for allegedly making phone threats against workers at an Oregon Department of Human Services office. Lacey, Wash., police Lt. Phil Comstock says 44-year-old Jeffrey Karvanek called a U.S. congressional field office in Lacey on Tuesday and threatened to shoot people in the Human Services office in Salem, Ore. Comstock tells KOMO-TV the man was upset about the outcome of a child custody issue.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities in Portland say a driver believed to be drunk hit five parked vehicles, a power pole and a house. KATU-TV says resident Frank Mahoney awoke yesterday morning to find a pickup tossed against his house. The driver had run off. Responding officers found the driver a few blocks away. Police say he wasn’t badly hurt. His name wasn’t released.
