SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A special session of the Oregon Legislature got off to a slow start as Gov. John Kitzhaber and legislative leaders tried to hold together a flimsy agreement on pension cuts, tax changes and agricultural regulations. The House and Senate repeatedly delayed their proceedings after opening the session yesterday, derailing initial plans to wrap up the session in one day. Still, senior lawmakers are optimistic they can keep the deal from falling apart. Lawmakers will return today.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland General Electric says its crews have restored power to more than 110,000 customers after outages caused by Oregon’s weekend rain and wind storms. By last night, the utility said only about 3,000 customers were still without power. In a statement, PGE said many of the remaining outages were small and require time-intensive work.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – A search team has rescued a California couple and their 23-foot motor home from the mud of a Southern Oregon logging road after the couple followed GPS instructions and got stuck two days ago. The Douglas County sheriff’s office says 73-year-old Charles Garton of Ridgecrest, Calif., called Saturday night to report he was stuck behind fallen trees and about four miles short of Oregon 42, the highway leading to Coos Bay, their destination.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland officials say a military plane with 17 people aboard landed safely at Portland International Airport after reporting a problem during flight. No one was hurt. The Oregonian says Portland Fire & Rescue spokesman Lt. Rich Chatman reports that a Dornier 328 turboprop plane indicated late yesterday afternoon it was having hydraulic failure related to its brakes. The branch of military involved and the plane’s flight path weren’t immediately known.
