PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – One of the toniest areas of Portland might soon be home to a tent city. And rather than express concern for their financial investments, opponents have criticized the city’s expedited process and worried for the welfare of those who would live outside during the cold, rainy winter. City leaders and homeless advocates say the tent city is not ideal, but it’s a safer environment than the street. The City Council is set to vote Oct. 16.
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – The city of Springfield is considering a proposal to expand its overnight parking program for homeless people who sleep in their vehicles. The Register-Guard says the city council is scheduled to vote tonight on whether to allow up to three vehicles to park at a church or industrial property that choose to let campers stay there. Only one vehicle is currently allowed per property. Property owners would decide how many overnight campers they’ll take in.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities are investigating as a homicide the death of a 71-year-old woman who was found in her Northwest Portland home Saturday. Washington County sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Ray said yesterday morning that more than one person was in custody but declined to release more details. No charges have been filed. Ray says Jacqueline Bell was killed in the early morning hours Saturday at her unincorporated Washington County home. Authorities believe she knew the person who killed her.
ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – A man wanted in connection with a 2007 shooting in Albany, Ore., is in Linn County Jail facing attempted murder and other charges. Heriberto Gonzalez is accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend during a dispute in 2007. He is scheduled to appear today in Linn County Circuit Court. His initial bail was set at $1 million.
