Remembering Those Who Served
A parade in November is always chancy at best, but the weather provided a sunny and dry backdrop yesterday for the eight annual Veteran’s Day Parade in Florence.
Hundreds of people lined both sides of the route through Old Town, cheering and applauding, as Veterans from every war from World War II through Afghanistan and Iraq strolled, marched and rode by.
All Veterans were honored, but this year women who served in the military were specifically singled out.
Prior to the parade, veterans gathered at a memorial outside the Florence Elks Lodge at 11-AM to remember those who have served, and especially those who fell in battle.
Celebrate Arts!
Work by a Keizer artist called “Modern Gothic” was named the “Best of Show” as the 2013 Celebrate Arts exhibition opened today at the Florence Events Center.
Colleen Goodwin-Chronister’s style, says spokesperson Paula Becker, is “contemporary realism”. That is exhibited with the blackened eye of a woman standing beside a young man holding a cardboard sign asking for help.
Goodwin-Chronister’s work is just one of several award winners; including an oil-on-canvas called “Cruel Sea” created by Jaroslav Lupinek of Florence. His piece garnered first place in the two dimensional category. The three-dimensional category was topped by Larry Bishop and his “Black Spruce Burl”.
The show will be open weekdays at the FEC between ten and five through December. The gallery will also be open an hour before and during intermissions of major concerts and shows.
Teachers, Aides and Medics have “Heart to Heart”
A half dozen paramedics and 59 school district employees got together last Friday morning for a little “heart to heart”.
No, it wasn’t a counseling session. It was a serious first-aid class including instruction on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation.
Many school employees are required to hold up-to-date basic first aid cards and be checked out in proper CPR techniques. An in-service day Friday allowed them to get together in the band room at Siuslaw High School for the instruction.
Western Lane Ambulance Paramedic Al Kreitz said sudden and unexpected cardiac arrest can strike any age without warning. Early CPR dramatically increases the survival rate.
Medics also provided instruction on the proper use of Automatic External Defibrillators… AEDs… during the class.
