BAKER CITY, Ore. (AP) – A new judge has been appointed to oversee the case of a 14-year-old boy accused of killing his foster father and the father’s uncle last month in eastern Oregon. The Baker City Herald reports Senior Judge J. Burdette Pratt of Vale, who retired last year, will now hear the case. Prosecutors had requested the previous judge be disqualified. The teen is accused of fatally shooting 43-year-old Michael Piete and 64-year-old Kenneth Gilliland at a hunting cabin.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Thanksgiving travelers planning to drive on Northwest freeways Sunday night may want to consider returning earlier. The National Weather Service in Portland predicts heavy snow on Cascades highway passes in Oregon and Washington with accumulating snow possible in the Oregon Coast Range. Cold arctic air is expected to follow.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The smell of money helped land a Southern Oregon man in jail on Monday. Authorities say 28-year-old Mark Hill of Phoenix faces drug charges after a police dog sniffed out $12,000 in cash made from drug sales. The Medford Mail-Tribune reports police began investigating when a dog zeroed in on a FedEx package sent to Hill’s address from Austin, Texas.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Officials at the Eugene airport expect Sunday to be their busiest day since the Oregon football team played in the BCS title game two years ago. KVAL reports that there are now two additional airlines serving the airport. Airport officials advise travelers to arrive early, confirm flight status and be prepared to open any wrapped packages.
