REDMOND, Ore. (AP) – The Deschutes County sheriff’s office says a 44-year-old man was apparently drunk when he was walking on railroad tracks in Redmond as a train approached. The man was hit early Tuesday and suffered a serious head injury. He was taken to St. Charles Medical Center.

UMATILLA, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Corrections Department says a 67-year-old inmate serving time at the prison in Umatilla died after being found unconscious in his single cell. Officials say Larry Hurst was found late Saturday night. Staffers began CPR and tried unsuccessfully to revive him. Hurst was serving time for five counts of marijuana delivery to a minor and one count of attempted second-degree sodomy out of Deschutes County.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Conservation groups are challenging U.S. Forest Service plans to log and thin outside Crater Lake National Park in an area that the groups want to see protected as wilderness. In a federal lawsuit filed in Eugene, the groups are asking a judge to stop the Loafer timber sale east of Diamond Lake on the Umpqua National Forest.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Quarterback Marcus Mariota has announced that he will return to Oregon for his junior season. There had been speculation that Mariota might declare himself eligible for the NFL. Following Oregon’s 36-35 victory over Oregon State in the Civil War last Friday, he said he hadn’t yet made a decision. But yesterday the school’s website said that Mariota would stay.
