PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Public Schools says the school district and its teachers union have signed a tentative agreement on a new contract for teachers. The district says in a statement issued last night that the signed agreement follows a “conceptual agreement” reached earlier in the day after a 23-hour bargaining session. The district’s 2,900 teachers had been prepared to walk out Thursday if no agreement was reached.

CANYON CITY, Ore. (AP) – Grant County prosecutors want to try a 14-year-old boy as an adult on charges of killing his foster father and another man at a hunting cabin in the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon. Court records show a hearing on the motion is to start Sept. 8 in Canyon City. Three weeks has been set aside for it.

CANBY, Ore. (AP) – Police say one of three men arrested in the weekend shooting death of a man in Canby, Ore., is the son of a convicted murderer. The Oregonian reports that Canby Police Chief Bret Smith says officers arrested Francis Paul Weaver yesterday. The newspaper says he is the son of Ward Weaver III, who is serving a life sentence for killing two young girls in 2002.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland fire official says a woman and her dog have been rescued unharmed after falling into a 20-foot-deep sinkhole that opened up in her backyard. Portland Fire & Rescue Lt. Rich Chatman says the woman in her 30s was trying to find her small poodle mix last night in her dark Portland backyard when she fell into a sinkhole about 3½ feet in diameter.
