Viking Baseball Wins Opener

Siuslaw held off Pleasant Hill in the bottom of the seventh inning yesterday for a 3-2 season opening win on the baseball diamond.  Connor Qualley struck out six and gave up three hits in five innings of work for the win… and helped himself at the plate with two hits.

The Vikings are slated to be at Creswell this afternoon for baseball, as well as the season opener for Siuslaw Softball… both games begin at 4:30.

Athlete of the Week

Siuslaw Baseball standout Connor Qualley is Coast Radio Sports Athlete of the week.  The senior left-hander was two-for-three at the plate, plus struck out six batters in the opening game of the season against the defending 3A champion Pleasant Hill.

Honorable mention goes to Brad Snow who pitched two innings, striking out two; giving up one hit and earning a save in relief for the Vikings.

Oregon State Women Making Post Season Appearance

On the court… The Oregon State women are headed to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 18 years.  The ninth-seeded Beavers will face number eight seed Middle Tennessee Sunday afternoon in Seattle.  The Oregon women have had their season extended as well.  They accepted a bid in the WNIT and will host Pacific Thursday evening at Matthew Knight Arena.

Beaver Men Hosting CBI opener

The Oregon State men will open the first round of the College Basketball Invitational tomorrow night at home against Radford.  Tipoff is set for seven… that game will air on KCFM beginning at 6:30.

Boys and Girls Club Shamrock Run Results

Monty Gregg of Bend was the men’s champion in Saturday’s 5-K Shamrock Fun Run hosted by the Boys and Girls Club.  His winning time was 16:31, nearly a full minute ahead of second place finisher Alan Porter of Florence.  David Spray, also of Florence, was third.

In the women’s race, Florence resident Leah Card was the winner in 19:06.  Ann Lacouture (LOK-uh-tour) and Bethany Goss, both of Florence, were second and third.
