PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A sheriff’s officer says a man suspected of shooting and wounding another man at a rural home west of Portland has been found dead after the home burned. A Washington County sheriff’s spokesman said officers found the body of 30-year-old Brian Olson inside the burned-out farmhouse in North Plains. The Oregonian reports that it appears the 24-year-old shooting victim, James Crandall, will survive. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Clackamas County, Ore., animal control manager says a large male German Shepherd that apparently triggered an Interstate 205 rollover crash last month as motorists swerved and braked to avoid the animal in the roadway has been euthanized. The Oregonian reports that shelter officials decided it was not safe to place him in a home.

FORT BRAGG, Calif. (AP) – More than 2,000 people braved fierce rain to honor a veteran Mendocino County sheriff’s deputy who was shot and killed by an Oregon man during a crime spree that began in Eugene a week ago. The memorial service for Ricky Del Fiorentino started at dawn yesterday with hundreds of patrol cars making a solemn 58-mile procession.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – Buildings in the Eastern Oregon city of Hermiston can now stand taller. The City Council this week amended its codes to allow commercially zoned buildings to be 50-feet tall instead of 35. The original reason for the 35-foot limit was because Hermiston Fire Department equipment could not reach higher. The department now has taller ladder trucks.
