PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man whose triple-murder conviction was overturned can sue the state of Oregon for wrongful conviction. The decision yesterday from the Oregon Court of Appeals allows Philip Cannon to go forward with a multi-million dollar lawsuit. Cannon was convicted in the 1998 killings of three people on a farm west of Salem. In 2009, he won a new trial. But the Oregon Department of Justice said it lost evidence. Prosecutors dropped the case.
ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – Albany police say they discovered three pounds of marijuana after responding to an altercation in which a father stabbed his adult son in the forearm. The Albany Democrat Herald reports Alexander Robertson was charged with drug crimes as well as assault, unlawful use of a weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm. His son Lee Thomas Cates faces a variety of marijuana-related charges.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A grieving Portland woman hopes Oregon will establish a statewide alert system to find hit-and-run drivers. It would operate similar to the Amber alert system for missing children. Kristi Finney-Dunn lost her 18-year-old son, Dustin Finney, three years ago when his bicycle was hit by a driver who fled the scene.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A state economist says Oregon is still a year away from recovering the jobs lost in the Great Recession. Josh Lehner with the Oregon Office of Economic Analysis says the state lost more than 8 percent of its jobs in the recession that began in 2007. In the recovery, Oregon has regained 70 percent of the lost jobs.
