PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The 30-year veteran chief clerk of the Oregon House has resigned following her lobbying for a 2007 bill amendment that may have benefited her financially. The Oregonian reports yesterday that House Speaker Tina Kotek alerted representatives that 66-year-old Ramona Kenady Line’s last day is today. She worked at the Legislature for 42 years, with 30 as chief clerk.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Divers have found the body of a man who jumped from Portland’s Ross Island bridge early yesterday. A friend told police the young man took off his shoes and shirt to swim the Willamette River below. At its center, the bridge is 123 feet above the water. Police said he jumped from the east end. Police said they don’t suspect criminal activity or a suicide attempt, but alcohol may have been a factor in his decision. Police learned he’d jumped when they went to the bridge about 3 a.m. to look into a report that two men were on it, one shirtless and leaning over the rail.
NEW YORK (AP) – A New York jury has deliberated for six hours without reaching a verdict in the trial of an Egyptian imam accused of supporting terrorist organizations from his London mosque. Jury deliberations began yesterday in the case against Mustafa Kamel Mustafa (muh-STAH’-fuh kah-MEHL’ muh-STAH’-fuh). The jury returns Monday morning. U.S. District Judge Katherine Forrest in Manhattan warned them not to be “swayed by sympathy, prejudice or fear.”
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Supreme Court has ruled that the state’s fish and wildlife department has for years incorrectly interpreted its own rules for making sure migratory fish can swim upstream of dams. The court ruled yesterday that the department must enforce a state law that puts the needs of the fish ahead of the dam owners’ rights to determine the best use of their water rights. Some landowners had complained that two dams downstream were blocking cutthroat trout from reaching their property.
